The new generation Zen 4 architecture developed by AMD for Ryzen and EPYC processors may come with a 40 percent speed increase over existing processors.
A new report from tech block ChipsandCheese suggests that Zen 4 processors will offer a 40% performance improvement over existing processors, as well as a 25% IPC increase.
The leaked information suggests that the EPYC Genoa engineering samples, AMD’s next-generation server family, are up to 29% faster than the current EPYC Milan processors, despite the same number of cores and frequency values.
At this point, the processors of Zen 4 architecture, which are expected to be released in 2022, will be produced by TSMC’s 5nm process. It is also stated that the processors can reach speeds up to 5GHz in all cores. However, it should be noted that all this is just a rumor, that we do not know with certainty the actual results until we make an official announcement or direct tests.
Small nanometer, high power
We know that AMD is working to produce 5nm Zen 4 processors, and thanks to this report, we can predict what kind of performance increase we will see.
According to the report, the 40% performance increase (even greater than the increase in AMD’s transition from Rome to Milan CPUs) is due to the size of the transistors in the manufacturing process. Theoretically, the smaller the size, the more transistors you can fit in a chip. Therefore, the transaction capacity is increasing considerably. So we can say that we owe the Zen 4’s basic performance increase to the transistor sizes.
The competition increased considerably when Intel got stuck in the 14nm process and AMD jumped to the 7nm process with Zen 2. Intel’s focus on the 10nm process recently and AMD’s transition to the 5nm process in this process will be against Intel again. However, let’s not forget that Intel manufactures its processors in its own facilities, and AMD has TSMC manufactured.
