Today’s computer technologies are based on the Neumann architecture, in which the information is moved out of the stored location and returned to the storage unit after being processed in the processor.
Productivity increase with HBM-PIM
This means a loss of performance as a result of bottlenecks at various stages during data transport. These bottlenecks are especially important in the HPC area where high volume data are processed. In the HBM-PIM developed for this purpose, data are processed directly in memory.
The new technology, called HBM-PIM (HBM-Processing In Memory), is based on the fact that the artificial intelligence engine developed with a DRAM focus reduces the transfer of data to a minimum by operating in parallel with the central processor in the system.
Thanks to the HBM-PIM technology integrated into the HBM2 Aquabolt solution, a performance of more than 2 times was achieved and the power consumption was reduced by up to 70%.
The new goal of Samsung engineers is to achieve high gains in HPC / AI processing areas, where power consumption is an important topic, as well as high bandwidth requirements.
