Backstreet Rookie, the new drama broadcast by SBS on Fridays and Saturdays based on a webtoon of the same title, has begun its broadcast generating controversy among viewers.
Viewers expectations were high because the drama stars Ji Chang Wook and Kim Yoo Jung and is directed by Lee Myeong Woo. In addition, the audience wanted to know how the macho style of webtoon was going to be represented in the drama.
At the press conference for the launch of Backstreet Rookie, Lee Myeong Woo said, “We directed the drama so that it is something the whole family can see. We are trying to choose the strong and positive elements of the original characters to create a drama that the whole family can enjoy. ”
Despite this, the first episode of Backstreet Rookie has generated controversy. In one scene, Jeong Saet Byeol (Kim Yoo Jung) uses his charms for Choi Dae Hyeon (Ji Chang Wook) to buy cigarettes. Also, they go to a complex of flats used for prostitution to show how naive the character is and a webtoon artist appears drawing adult drawings.
Viewers have harshly criticized these Backstreet Rookie scenes because they consider that they magnify male fantasies and materialize female sexuality. In fact, some viewers have reported it to the Korean Communication Standards Commission.
