BLACK WIDOW News: WITH THE PREMIERE OF THE BLACK WIDOW FILM, MANY WANT TO KNOW WHO ALEXEI SHOSTAKOV IS. LET’S GET A LOOK AT THIS CHARACTER

The Black Widow movie premiered this Friday, July 9, and along with its arrival in theaters, several characters joined the MCU. Among them Alexei Shostakov, better known as the Red Guardian or the Red Guardian.

In this film he is portrayed by actor David Harbor. He is best known for his role as Police Chief Jim Hopper of Hawkins, the fictional Indiana town from the popular Netflix television series Stranger Things.

ALEXEI SHOSTAKOV IS MARVEL’S SECOND NETWORK GUARDIAN

Alexei Shostakov is older than the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Actually, he is a character that comes straight from the comics. The fact is that he is only one of those who have carried the name of the Red Guardian.

In the pages of the comics at least seven heroes have had such a name. Not at the same time, but over the years. In this case, Shostakov would be the second, and he is one of the most recognized.

As often happens in the MCU, Marvel Studios decided to change a few things. For example, in the comics he was the husband of Natasha Romanoff, but in the Black Widow movie he has the role of a father figure.

The original comic book character fought in World War II on the side of the USSR. Besides being a pilot, he was an agent of the secret police, the famous KGB. He not only faced the Nazi hosts of Adolf Hitler, but the United States.

HERO OF THE SOVIET UNION AND ENEMY OF THE USA

He fought on the side of the Soviets in the Korean War. So while for the Soviet Union he was seen as a hero, Alexei Shostakov is a villain for the Americans.

Arguably, he is the communist equivalent of Captain America. When did he first appear in the comics? Well, in 1967’s The Avengers # 43, his ‘parents’ are writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema. But there is something curious about this character.

While Captain America boosted his strengths and abilities with the famous super soldier serum, this Red Guardian had nothing like it. At least the original version had nothing of the kind.

In reality, he is a highly trained combatant, skilled in handling weapons. He is a true ace of the air, as he fought against the best pilots of Nazi Germany, as well as against their American counterparts in the Cold War.

Added to this is great physical strength and endurance: Alexei Shostakov is a very athletic character. He has a throwing weapon, a disc that comes off his belt. That’s a nod to Steve Rogers’ alter ego shield.

As you might imagine, the colors of his uniform are opposite to those of Captain America. He rules red, in addition to a bit of black and white. As we mentioned before, hero for some, villain for others.
