China has virtually taken over the Indian smartphone market. We all know that there was a great prejudice against Chinese manufacturers in the early days of smartphones. Canalys conducted a study of shipments in the Indian smartphone market. According to the research, although smartphone shipments have suffered a major recession with the COVID-19 outbreak, they recorded record growth in the second half of this year. In 2020, there was the biggest decrease of 40% compared to 2019. However, in the third quarter of 2020, a recovery began in smartphone shipments compared to the third quarter of 2019. In the 4th quarter of 2020, a 13% growth was recorded in smartphone shipments.
In the Indian smartphone market, Xiaomi shipped 12 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2020, ranking 1st with a share of 27%. Samsung came in second with a 21% share, with 9.2 million shipments. Vivo ranked 3rd with 13% share with 7.7 million smartphone shipments, while OPPO ranked 4th with 13% share, shipping 5.5 million smartphones. In 5th place is realme, which has shipped 5.1 million smartphones.
Smartphone shipments dropped by 2% in India, despite heavy declines worldwide in the first half of 2020. While 145 million smartphones were shipped in 2020, 148 million smartphones were shipped in 2019.
In 2020, Xiaomi shipped a small drop of 28%, with shipments of 40.7 million smartphones. Samsung, on the other hand, achieved a growth rate of 20% with 28.6 million smartphone shipments. Vivo ranked third with 26.9 million smartphone shipments, while realme ranked fourth with 19.5 million smartphone shipments. OPPO ranked fifth, with shipments of 11.7 million smartphones. Despite the tensions between China and India in 2020, Chinese manufacturers managed to make up 77% of the smartphone market in India.
According to analyst Varun Kannan, Chinese manufacturers are preparing for 5G technology. In addition, MediaTek Dimensity chipsets with 5G support in the whole smartphone market will be more preferred than Snapdragon chipsets as they will have an affordable price tag.
