FAST (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope), which has a diameter of exactly 500 meters, can detect weak signals in space much better than any other radio telescope with its incredibly sensitive structure (three times more sensitive than Arecibo). China started the construction of the giant telescope in 2011 and the project was completed in 2016, after an investment of approximately $ 180 million. The size of 30 football fields, FAST has been hunting for signals in the depths of space for nearly four years.
Arecibo is replaced by FAST
Prior to FAST, the title of the world’s largest radio telescope belonged to the Arecibo Observatory. As you know, the Arecibo Observatory has crashed in the past weeks and has come to the end of its term of office. Unfortunately, Arecibo’s collapse has been a major loss for the scientific world. But now, after opening FAST to the world, astronomers will have a powerful radio telescope again.
“Arecibo has inspired us a lot in the design of FAST. Our science committee aims to make FAST increasingly available to the international community,” said Wang Qiming, principal investigator of FAST. He spoke in the form.
