In 2020, sales of laptops running on the Chrome OS operating system surpassed Mac sales for the first time. The coronavirus pandemic has greatly benefited Chromebook sales.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the transition to remote work and education not only increased the sales of laptops running Chrome OS, but also contributed to it getting ahead of computers with macOS operating systems. The gap has become noticeable especially towards the end of last year.
According to data from research company IDC, Chromebooks have a good momentum throughout 2020. Sales peaked in the last quarter, four times higher than 2019. As of the end of the year, the share of Windows-based computers was 76.7%, Chrome OS 14.4% and macOS 7.7%.
Three quarters dominated
When we look at last year’s data, we see that Chromebook sales outperformed macOS computers for three quarters. Chromebooks from manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo outselled Apple’s desktops and laptops. Of course, it should not be forgotten that 2020 has a different story due to the coronavirus pandemic.
