Urban Aeronautics, manufacturer of VTOL vehicles (acronym for Vertical Take-Off) has established a partnership with HyPoint to produce the CityHawk powered by hydrogen. Referring to the retro look when viewed horizontally, the vehicle uses powerful propellers to fly over urban perimeters.

Right away, we can easily identify a certain resemblance to the classic DMC DeLorean from Back to the Future (1985), but the design is misleading: the CityHawk is an extremely futuristic project and aims to bring flying cars to life. His project is inspired by the AirMule, a vehicle intended for military forces, but aimed at mobility in cities.

HyPoint technologies, in turn, combine the design and construction of the vehicle with an extremely light power system – making it ideal for VTOL vehicles. This energy source has shown promise for aircraft because it has a light body, but has an electrical density similar to that of lithium-ion batteries; not to mention even shorter recharge time.

The CityHawk is different from the vast majority of projects in the sector, considering that it does not have wings and its size is close to that of an SUV. Urban Aeronautics liked to call it “fancraft”, playing with the word “fan” which, in Portuguese, is “fan” or “fan”.

The vehicle holds six crew members comfortably and, of course, would require intense training for piloting. Currently, the project is still only on paper, but the company is running to guarantee certifications and continue the development.

“We want HyPoint’s collaboration to integrate its next generation hydrogen fueling systems into eVTOL transport for the urban mobility market,” said Rafi Yoeli, CEO of Urban Aeronautics. He believes that the high energy density of these batteries is the “key to the future of eVTOL aviation”.

“Flying cars” may not be that far away. In military tests, the Cormorant – another VTOL designed for military personnel – shows great results, even though its body is too long for urban flights.
