A GTA 6 rumor that stands out from the rest
Although there may still be a few years to go before we see the arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6, that has not stopped the rumors of what we could see. From changing maps to Fortnite, to planned arrival dates and exclusivity for PS5 and Xbox Series X / S, there are many predictions about the possible next game from the Rockstar company.
Perhaps one of the most talked about, and perhaps the one most likely to come true, is that the game will feature a female protagonist for the first time in the history of the saga. In fact, this could mark a milestone for Rockstar, who throughout their existence, have rarely put us in control of a heroine.
Rockstar and its lack of heroines
Rockstar has shown with its games, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Max Payne 3 and GTA V that it can give us great stories full of various emotions. However, while he has also created some solid female characters, like Sadie Adler, he has not allowed them to be the ones to guide the narrative.
If we get to see Rockstar’s past, we find that it has had some female protagonists in its games, but in somewhat curious ways and quite rare. That is why we decided to share with you the occasions when the company gave us control of a femme fatale.
Female protagonists in GTA
We had already mentioned that the fact that GTA 6 has a female protagonist would mark a first time in the franchise. Perhaps the most purist fans of the saga remember that in the two titles that started it all, the player had the possibility to choose her avatar. Among its cast were some women.
However, it could be said that this attempt doesn’t count, since you basically only picked one image at the beginning of the game. The mechanics and story didn’t change at all whether you played as a man or a woman. Also, if you remember those early Rockstar installments, the view was aerial and your character was just like a point with arms and legs, so it wasn’t the big difference.
For years, players stopped being able to use a woman in GTA, at least until the arrival of GTA Online. Here, users can create the protagonist that they please and also, they do change some things depending on whether you are a man or a woman. Perhaps because of the success that this game still enjoys and the good reception of the three playable characters in GTA V, it is that Rockstar will finally dare to give a female star a chance.
The women of Red Dead Redemption
Something similar happens with the Red Dead Redemption saga, the Rockstar games that take us to the Wild West at the beginning of the 20th century. Since it also has its online component known as Red Dead Online. Here you can create your own outlaw, who if you wish, can be a woman.
However, what makes RDR different from GTA is that even though they are not in the main role, it has more strong and better written female characters. When we talk about GTA, only Catalina comes to mind, who appears in San Andreas as a crazy girlfriend of CJ and in the third installment as an antagonist. Outside of it there are not many memorable ones.
Instead, in the Rockstar cowboy series we meet Sadie Adler, who becomes a feared bounty hunter after the death of her husband. There’s also Bonnie Macfarlane, who helps John Marston recover and go after his first kill; And we can’t forget Karen Jones and Miss Grimshaw. Their stories just made us think that they would be able to bring their own game and that Rockstar should give them a chance.
Other Rockstar stars
If we want to get more technical, Rockstar is a very large company with several studios under its ownership. One of them is Rockstar Leeds, which was previously called Mobius Entertainment. These developers gave us two female lead games: Barbie Horse Adventures: GBA’s Blue Ribbon Race and PS2’s Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue.
Another of his studios is Rockstar New England, which used to be called Mad Doc Software. They were responsible for titles like Star Trek Armada, the Empire Earth series, and Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna. In the latter, you created your own character which allowed you to spend it being a woman.
It seems that until now, Rockstar has only had heroines in its games, if the player so chooses. However, there is currently an attempt to give them more prominence in video games and perhaps the rumor of the female main role in GTA 6 will become a reality. If this is true, maybe they will also give us the RDR prequel with Sadie Adler that many fans have been asking for since 2018. Would you like the company to cast more female characters in starring roles?
