Apple held its thirty-first conference for Apple WWDC 2020 developers on the evening of June 22. For the first time due to the coronavirus pandemic, the conference was held entirely online. It introduced updates to operating systems for smartphones (iOS), tablets (iPadOS), smart watches (watchOS), laptops (macOS) and smart TVs (tvOS) – and also announced the transition of the MacBook to its own Apple Silicon processors, which Tim Cook called the company a “historic day.” Beta versions of all updated operating systems will be released in July, and a full release will take place this fall. hromadske collected the main points from the presentation.
The main innovations concern the new version of the operating system for iPhone smartphones – iOS 14.
One of the most revolutionary changes is the introduction of the Picture in Picture function and offline translation. The first feature allows you to save video playback when exiting the application – for example, videos from YouTube will play if you exit the browser in the menu. Offline translation works through the Translate application – it allows you to translate entire phrases in different languages without the need for an Internet connection.
Another significant update is App Clips. These are mini-versions of applications that do not require installation on the phone and can be called quickly – and then removed from the phone. App Clips will work via NFC wireless or special code scanning.
Redesigned in iOS 14 and interaction with the voice assistant Siri. Now it will not occupy the entire screen, but will be displayed as a small “ball” at the bottom of the screen – for example, if you ask him for weather information.
Also in iOS 14 added support for widgets – as in the main operating system-competitor Android, they can be placed on the home screen of the iPhone. And the App Library will group them within one desktop – so developers eliminate the need to distribute applications between different desktops.
The standard Messages app has also been updated: now you can pin chats at the top, convert audio to a text message, and animated emoji – Memoji – have been redesigned (including the ability to add a medical mask). Group chats have also changed: now you can reply to a specific message (inline replies) and “tag” a person – essentially the same as in Telegram. And the group chat icon has become animated.
The Maps application has also been updated, especially in the direction of “environmental friendliness”. It will now calculate routes for cyclists and electric cars – even taking into account the availability of stairs and charging stations. Areas of high pollution are now indicated for individual cities. And yet – recommended for visiting places. The updated Maps will be available not only in the United States, but also in Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

On tablets, Apple has significantly improved the capabilities of handwriting with the proprietary stylus Apple Pencil. For example, shapes drawn by him will be automatically adjusted. But most of the new features have come in handwriting: first, it is now searchable; secondly, with the help of artificial intelligence it will now be possible to distinguish individual words and letters of a handwritten text – and even to turn it into a printed one.
Interestingly, Apple’s presentation showed that the new device recognizes even Chinese characters, not just English words.
Search in iPadOS has also been improved: it is now common to all applications. In this case, the search automatically searches in text documents. Notification of a call on the iPad will no longer take up the entire screen, but will appear at the top of the screen so as not to distract. Apple tablets will also allow you to change the default email client and browser.
In addition, the iPad will run the already mentioned App Clips, updated Siri, Messages, “Maps” and widgets that have been updated in iOS.

Apple’s smartwatch will have its own app store, which already has 20,000 applications available. In addition, users will be able to exchange dials on the Apple Watch.
There’s more control over sleep mode: Wind Down will automatically restrict Apple devices (such as unlocking the screen during night mode) to get the user ready for sleep.
And yet – the Activity application was renamed Fitness, and dances were added to physical activities. And the Apple Watch will automatically track when you wash your hands and tell you if you’ve done it carefully.
Apple WatchOS 7 is getting a number of new features, including a handwashing detector and countdown to make sure you’re sudsing off all the germs (no word on if it will shame non-hand-washers into going back into the bathroom, though). #WWDC20 #WWDC2020 https://t.co/GNv0oCTtjF pic.twitter.com/QVAPLbF1v1

The new operating system will be called Big Sur – in honor of the eponymous district in California.
First of all, it’s about updating the design of applications (for example, Safari has the ability to put your photo instead of a blank background and its own built-in translator). By the way, Apple boasted a new update to the Safari browser, which now loads pages 50% faster than Google Chrome.
They also announced the creation of a control center (like the one in iOS and iPadOS) and new notification sounds. In general, according to the columnist The Verge, Apple is even closer to the operating system for its laptops with operating systems for phones and tablets.
Apple Silicon is a proprietary processor for MacBook
Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced that all subsequent MacBooks will use Apple’s own Silicon processor (currently running on Intel processors). Prior to that, according to the developers, they went ten years, releasing two billion of their own processors for smartphones, tablets and smart watches.
The main highlight of Apple’s own processor is its performance and increased battery life. Older applications (and even games) will be compatible with the new processor thanks to Rosetta 2 technology – while maintaining the performance of the new process.
The company plans to release the first laptops with Apple Silicon by the end of the year – and for developers, data on new hardware will be available this week. And Apple plans to complete the full transition to its own processors in two years.

And a little about something else
CarPlay – the electronic car key on iOS – will now support 80% of new cars. It can be used via NFC and now transferred to other iPhone users.
AirPods: Apple headphones now automatically switch between devices when brought closer or during a call. And AirPods now support surround sound technology: it will sound like a home theater – even if you turn the device or head.
Privacy: Users will now have even more control over their data – for example, in Safari you can see which trackers are active on the site.
Apple TV: The aforementioned Picture-in-Picture feature will also be available on Apple Smart TVs. And also – on the streaming service Apple TV + announced the series “Foundation”, based on the books of science fiction writer Isaac Azimov. The series is scheduled for release in 2021.
