New WWE SmackDown superstar Matt Riddle recently spoke to talkSPORT’s Alex McCarthy and made statements about the original plans for his former tag team, The BroserWeights, with Pete Dunne. Dunne was undergoing confinement in the UK due to travel restrictions related to COVID-19, and that led WWE to put Timothy Thatcher with Riddle as his temporary partner. Recently, they lost the NXT Tag Team Championships to Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner, members of Imperium. Later, Thatcher defeated Riddle in combat under the Cage Fight stipulation. Riddle revealed that he and Dunne were originally slated for a short reign as champions and team, but fans’ reactions changed those plans.
“Bro, all my eggs are in the Broserweight basket,” said Riddle. “I will be honest, we were united and we formed a team and I did not think we should last more than a couple of weeks as champions. But the fans loved us, we were working very well together and Pete and I got along pretty well, we have very good Connection. Whether in the Indies or NXT, we had it. ”
Riddle also said teaming up with Dunne was one of his favorite things he did in WWE. He stated that they were scheduled to defend the Championships at NXT Takeover over the WrestleMania 36 weekend before COVID-19 changed plans. Riddle also added that he may have reached the main roster earlier.
“Honestly, teaming up with Dunne was one of my favorite things to do in wrestling since I came to WWE,” said Riddle. “Unfortunately, a number of different events happened and I know we were about to defend the NXT Tag Team Championships at the Takeover show over the weekend at WrestleMania. I don’t know what was going to happen after that. It could have originally come to SmackDown before, but the coronavirus pandemic made Pete unable to leave the UK, and Timothy replaced him as my partner. Tim is still a great fighter. He beat me in a cage match! Not everyone can do that, you have than being some kind of stud to beat another stud. The guy is brilliant! “
