MediaTek MT9638 aims to make a difference in 4K smart TVs with its innovation in artificial intelligence.

MediaTek announced a new chipset for 4K smart TV models. MediaTek MT9638 manages to attract attention especially with its artificial intelligence processing unit (APU) feature. This will allow TVs to support technologies such as AI super resolution, AI image quality, AI voice assistants, variable refresh rate and motion estimation and motion compensation (MEMC).

MT9638 comes with ARM Cortex-A55 CPU and Mali-G52 GPU, while APU is a separate unit. The chipset offers 4K60 resolution and support for HEVC, VP9 and AV1 decoding. Additionally, there is support for Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual X audio along with HDR10 + video.

MT9638 also has support for the latest connectivity standards. Examples of these are HDMI 2.1a and Wi-Fi 6. While HDMI 2.1a will be able to support the features of new generation game consoles, AI super resolution can help upscale older content.

4K smart TVs powered by MT9638 are expected to reach the consumer market in the second quarter of 2021.
