MediaTek has rolled up its sleeves for its flagship chipset. In the first quarter of 2021, we will see the Snapdragon 888 competitor 5G chipset from MediaTek.
MediaTek CEO announced yesterday that the latest 5G flagship chip will be released in the first quarter of next year, according to a report from China’s Taiwan Economic Daily. It is said that the chip will arrive before the Chinese New Year. MediaTek will directly target the Snapdragon 888 with the flagship chipset.
As you know, recently Qualcomm released its annual 5G flagship chip Snapdragon 888. In this context, Cai Lixing states that MediaTek will launch new products later and will start the first major war in mobile chipsets in 2021.
Taiwan’s media points out that the industry expects MediaTek’s various 5G chips to be released next year to be produced using TSMC’s 5nm or 6nm process. So these chips will really target the Snapdragon 888.
In addition, Cai Lixing states that there is a chance that the global 5G smartphone sales rate will increase to 18 percent in 2021, 49 percent in 2022 and about 60 percent in 2023.
However, TSMC’s advanced production capability can be difficult for MediaTek, especially since the 5nm process is very tight. Therefore, it seems very difficult for MediaTek to get a share from Apple’s production line.
Recently, IDC announced its optimistic report on the growth of the smartphone market in the fourth quarter. The market research firm pointed out that the growing demand for 5G smartphones is the main driver. Total shipments are expected to increase 2.4 percent by the end of the year to 377.7 million units.
This upward trend will continue in 2021, with an increase of 4.4 percent compared to 2020. Now that 5G is making a splash, MediaTek was supposed to steal a role from its competitors. Let’s see if the company, which has achieved success with Dimensity chips, will be able to make a name for itself with flagship chips?
