The PlayStation (PS5) had details of its specifications revealed by Sony last Wednesday (18). In the presentation, the chief architect of the PS5, Mike Cerny, detailed the new parts that make up the console, such as the processor, video card, memory and SSD storage. However, the video game’s design, price and release date still remain a mystery. Check out how the PlayStation 5 fares when paired with its predecessor PlayStation 4 (PS4). The PS5’s main processing unit will be based on the AMD Ryzen “Zen 2” structure with 8 cores at a flexible frequency of 3.5 GHz. The new processor is much more powerful than the original PlayStation 4, based on the structure of the Jaguar from AMD, which also had 8 cores, but at 1.6 GHz. The PlayStation 4 Pro, the most powerful model of the console launched in 2016, used the same processor as the standard PS4, with the same number of cores, but at a 2.3 GHz frequency.
In a video game, the processor is responsible for running the technical part of the game, as necessary calculations for physics, artificial intelligence, among others. Usually, your contributions to the game are more imperceptible, unlike the video card that is usually the center of attention.
Video card (GPU)
The main responsible for the graphics of a video game is the video card, or GPU. The PlayStation 5’s GPU fell slightly behind the competitor Xbox Series X, but still has plenty of power. It uses a custom AMD Radeon RDNA 2 framework with 10.28 Teraflops and 36 computational units. The PlayStation 4 card, based on AMD Radeon GCN, has only 1.84 Teraflops and 18 computing units.
The main novelty of the PS5 GPU, however, is the ability to use Ray Tracing technology. This feature directly calculates the light rays in the scenes to create more convincing lighting, as well as more realistic reflections and shadows. The technology did not exist at the time the PS4 was developed and can give the new consoles a “next generation” look.
The role of RAM is to keep data that will be used to form the look of the game, such as models, textures and more, quickly accessible. The PlayStation 4 was known to have an extremely fast memory, 8 GB in the GDDR5 standard, faster than that of its competitor Xbox One. In this new generation, the PS5 will use 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, a natural evolution without many surprises. The Xbox Series X also has the same model and amount of memory, so there is no longer an advantage for the Sony console in this regard.
One of the biggest surprises during the presentation was the inclusion of an 825 GB SSD for storage on the PS5. An SSD is a solid state drive, with no moving parts inside, unlike HDDs where there is literally a hard drive moving inside them. The PS4 used a 500 GB HDD at its launch, which was capable of reading up to 100 MBs per second. The new PlayStation 5 SSD promises to reach an impressive speed of 5.5 GB per second.
One point that remains a mystery about the PlayStation 5 is its look. Most players have seen 3D model simulations of what the video game might look like, with a “V” shaped space in the middle that would symbolize the Roman number 5. These designs were created based on alleged development kits (known as dev kits) on the console, which have this space. However, the look of these dev kits does not necessarily reflect the final video game model.
The PlayStation 4 has a simple appearance, with minimalist and slanted lines so that it doesn’t just look like a box. If the PlayStation 5 follows the tradition that has followed Sony consoles since the PlayStation 2, it is to be expected that the new console can be used both horizontally and vertically, with a base that must be sold separately.
3D audio “Tempest”
Another new feature of the PlayStation 5 that does not exist on the PS4 is the new three-dimensional sound system presented by Mark Cerny during the broadcast. The new technology called “Tempest” 3D AudioTech, promises to be able to make players hear sounds around them and, thus, create a total immersion so that they feel inside the world of the game.
