It was revealed that Samsung was planning to build a $ 10 billion chip manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas. It is now said that the company could invest much more than originally reported. The new chipset factory is expected to cost more than $ 17 billion, according to documents submitted by Samsung Foundry in Arizona, New York and Texas. Samsung will surpass itself in the chipset.
Samsung’s potential chip manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas is said to create around 1,800 jobs. If everything goes as planned, the factories will come into operation in the fourth quarter of 2023. Although the company has not revealed for which manufacturing process the new facility will be designed, the company is said to be producing 3nm (MBCFET) chips.
The company only produces chipsets based on leading processes such as 7nm and 5nm in South Korea. The current production line in Texas produces non-modern 14nm and 11nm processors. However, Samsung Foundry has enough customers in the US, including IBM, Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Tesla. This means that it can set up a private factory in the country for these customers.
Samsung’s current plan, submitted to the Texas government, includes a 7 million square meter processor factory on the company’s 640-acre land. The new manufacturing facility will be at the bottom of Samsung’s existing factory. This means that the company has no plans to upgrade its processor plant to newer processes in the near future.
