SpaceX’s contract, which won the tender for the human-landing system that NASA will use to re-land people on the Moon, has been suspended due to the complaints of rival companies.
It has agreed with SpaceX for the human landing system (HLS), which is an important part of the intense work spent by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to land people on our satellite again and constitutes one of the critical pillars of the Artemis project developed in this context. However, the agreement reached for $ 2.89 billion with a last minute development was suspended.
Objections of Blue Origin and Dynetics prompted the suspension of SpaceX’s contract from NASA. The National Team, which was established under the leadership of Blue Origin, a space company owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and partnered with companies named Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Draper, and Dynetics’ human download systems were also among the candidates of the project.
As a result of the lost deal, the efforts of Blue Origin and Dynetics, who filed a protest at the Government Liability Bureau recently, yielded results. In his application, Blue Origin accused the institution of “changing the goal posts at the last minute” and stated that the Artemis project, for which the year 2024 was targeted, was thus put in danger.
NASA, on the other hand, announced that the HLS project was suspended until the application made on April 26th. The statement was made by NASA spokesperson Monica Witt.
NASA plans to visit our satellite with two astronauts as part of the Artemis project, which was last sent by humans in 1972. In the statement made by NASA after the award won by SpaceX, “With this authority, NASA and our partners will take important steps in deep space exploration areas that will spread over a long period with the equality of men and women while performing the manned trial mission to be held on the surface of the Moon in the 21st century. With the step in question, humanity will enter into an effort for the sustainable exploration of our satellite and our eyes will be focused on much more lands, including Mars. ” statements were used.
The landing vehicle SpaceX will develop as part of the HLS project is based on the company’s Starship spacecraft. You can read the details of the landing systems developed by the competitors here.
