Sony Crystal LED displays are on sale for those who want to create virtual backgrounds instead of green screens in studios. The screens can reach a brightness of 1800 candela.
The virtual background screens featured in the filming of The Mandalorian series seem to herald a new era. Sony develops Crystal LED displays for studios that want to create this kind of virtual background.
Virtual background instead of green screen
Thanks to the huge virtual screen created by combining multiple LED screens, players can adapt to the scenario as if they were really in that place. In addition, shots can be instantly repeated while the actors are there, or the background can be changed instantly.
The interest in this system, which is ideal for studios that want a more closed shooting environment due to the pandemic period, is growing. Sony is also optimizing the Crystal LED display series for use in virtual backgrounds.
Developed in 2012, Crystal LED displays were intended to compete with OLED displays and consisted of mini LED modules in microLED style. In this way, brighter colors and ease of installation were provided.
The new LED displays brought by Sony to the CES 2021 fair have a contrast ratio of 1000000: 1. It includes many features of Sony televisions such as HDR, 120fps speed and 3D compatibility.
Differently, C series screens appeal mostly to lobbies and promotion areas. Series B was developed jointly with Sony Pictures. The screen can reach a brightness of 1800 candela per square meter and can be used as a studio background.
It is estimated that Sony Crystal LED displays, which are expected to reach million dollar costs according to their size, will be actively used by Sony Pictures. Thus, a new trend can begin.
