CBS All Access announced that it is working on a new series from the Star Trek universe, with Spock as the protagonist. According to Variety, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be set in the period prior to the classic series, before Captain Kirk took over the USS Enterprise.
The series will have the return of Ethan Peck as Spock. The actor made his debut as the Vulcan in Star Trek: Discovery. They also return to the Anson Mount franchise as Captain Christopher Pike, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One.
Julie McNamara, executive vice president and head of programming for CBS All Access, sees the new spin-off as an opportunity to offer fans a little more of the characters they’ve enjoyed so much in Star Trek: Discovery.
“Fans fell in love with the performances of Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck in the roles of these iconic characters when they first appeared on Star Trek: Discovery last season,” said McNamara. “This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a new perspective and a series of adventures to Star Trek.”
With this new derivative, the Star Trek franchise now has five productions by CBS All Access. They are: Star Trek: Discovery, which will have a third season debuting this year; Star Trek: Picard, already renewed for the second season; Star Trek: Short Treks and the adult animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks.
“When we said we heard the fans’ love for Pike, Number One and Spock when they embarked on Star Trek: Discovery last season, we were serious,” said producer Alex Kurtzma. “These iconic characters have an important legacy in the Star Trek canon, but many of their stories have yet to be told. With Akiva and Henry in charge, Enterprise, its team and its fans are on an extraordinary journey to new frontiers in the Star Trek universe. ”
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has no release date yet.
