Norwegian billionaire and investor Øystein Stray Spetalen made an unexpected move and bought Norway’s largest Bitcoin exchange.
Spetalen, one of Norway’s most distinguished and experienced stock market investors, has in the past rejected Bitcoin as an investment asset and a solid virtual currency.
According to a report published by Norwegian news site Dagens Naeringsliv, Spetalen changed its mind about Bitcoin; It bought Bitcoin and invested in MiraiEx, Norway’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. The two people who made him change his mind were the founders of MiraiEx.
The MiraiEx crypto exchange was specifically designed for the Norwegian crypto market and allows people to buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and XRP directly using Norwegian Krone (NOK).
Spetalen: “I was wrong about Bitcoin”
At the DNB Invest conference in early March, Spetalen spoke about Bitcoin but showed no interest in investing in digital assets. He said that Bitcoin’s energy consumption is higher than the entire consumption of his country, and therefore extremely hostile to the environment.
Spetalen suggested that the payment systems available today are going well, and then the EU should intervene and take action in the use of BTC in the region.
“The authorities and the EU should ban this immediately. Then you reduce CO2 emissions significantly. ”
However, in a new interview with the same news site, the 58-year-old oil investment guru said that MiraiEx changed his mind about Bitcoin after meeting the founders Thuc and Øyvind.
“When the facts change, I change too. I met Miraiex’s founders, Thuc and Øyvind, the day after the podcast was recorded in March, and I realized I was wrong. ”
Spetalen said the outlook was also changed by Norwegian energy giant Kjell Inge Røkke, who acted in favor of Bitcoin interests in early March. The company founded Seetee, a crypto company dedicated to investing in projects related to BTC and other cryptocurrencies.
Seetee purchased BTC worth NOK 500 million at a price that Spetalen described as higher than what he paid for his own BTC. The new bitcoin investor came to the conclusion that he was very positive about MiraiEx and joined the exchange’s board of directors.
