Nintendo released on Thursday (7) its newest financial report, which brings some curious data regarding the performance of the company’s products and also the changes seen in times of pandemic of the new coronavirus.
Throughout the fiscal year, which started on April 1, 2019 and was until March 31, 2020, the company sold 21.03 million console units – an increase of 24% over the same period in the previous fiscal year and more than predicted. Factors pointed to success include the launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite and the steady sales of the traditional model.
In terms of internal performance, the numbers indicate that the Nintendo Switch is the third best-selling console in the company’s history, behind only the leader Wii – which has almost twice as many units sold – and Nintendinho.
In the quarter that ended at the end of March 2020, the company posted an operating profit tripled over the previous year, with US $ 842 million recorded. According to Nintendo, the new coronavirus “had only a limited impact on this fiscal year ‘s results.” However, she set goals considered “conservative” for the coming months, believing that the market will be slowed by the pandemic.
Nintendo also sold 168.72 million game units in the fiscal year, up 42.3% from the previous fiscal year.
The highlight in terms of games could not be another. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, even though it came out almost at the end of March, became the fastest selling title on the entire platform.
In addition to the success among the fan base that already awaited the title, he generated several memes and became a kind of “symbol of escapism” by showing an ideal community life in times of pandemic and social isolation in the real world. However, the company knows that, although the title has become a phenomenon at the moment, it cannot rely solely on the game in the long run.
