Francis Lawrence, director of the four Hunger Games films, is ready to return to the nation of Panem. Lionsgate confirmed that the filmmaker will lead the adaptation of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a new book by American author Suzanne Collins.
The new plot takes place 64 years before the events of the Hunger Games and presents the origin of Coriolanus Snow. As fans of books and movies know, the character becomes an authoritarian ruler and the main villain of the saga in the future.
In addition to Francis Lawrence, Lionsgate also announced the return of Nina Jacobson as a producer alongside Brad Simpson and Michael Arndt. Author Suzanne Collins herself will be the screenwriter for the adaptation and will serve as executive producer.
So far, the cast and possible debut date for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes have not been revealed. However, the American studio certainly intends to repeat the success of the previous four productions that together grossed $ 2.97 billion.
“This new story is creatively exciting and takes the world to new complex dimensions that open up incredible cinematic possibilities,” says Joe Drake, president of Lionsgate, in a press release. “We are excited to be meeting again for this unique franchise. We can’t wait to start production ”.
New saga book to be released in May
The Hunger Games pre-sequence, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will be published on May 19 in the United States. Interestingly, Lionsgate had already shown an interest in making the adaptation shortly after the book was announced by the author.
In Brazil, Editora Rocco confirmed that it will be responsible for publishing the work in the country. However, there is still no title in Portuguese and the release is expected.
