Volvo will focus on producing all-electric vehicles by 2030 and start selling online exclusively. The Swedish-based company announced on Tuesday that Volvo’s entire car line will be fully electric by 2030, joining several automakers planning to phase out fossil fuel engines by the end of this decade.

When asked about future demand for electric vehicles, Volvo Chief Executive Officer Hakan Samuelsson said, “I am completely convinced that there are no customers who want to stay with the gasoline engine,” and explained that they believe electric vehicles are more attractive to customers.

Volvo argues that 50 percent of global sales should be all-electric cars and other mild-hybrid models by 2025. Owned by the Zheijiang Geely Holding Group, the company will Volvo launch a new family of electric cars, all of which will be sold exclusively online in the next few years. The company unveiled the first of its models on Tuesday, the C40, an all-electric SUV with a battery range of about 420 kilometers. It was announced that there will also be wireless update support for electric vehicles at the event. At this point, Henrik Green, chief technology officer, mentioned that the C40 will be developed over time with software upgrades.

Automakers are in a big race to switch to zero-emission models, and bans on fossil fuel vehicles are also on the agenda in some countries. Ford Motor announced last month that its series in Europe will switch to fully electric vehicles by 2030, Jaguar by 2025, and Volkswagen-owned Bentley by 2030. Now well-known car manufacturer Volvo is joining these companies.
