Simpson News: HUMBERTO VÉLEZ’S RETURN TO THE SERIES WAS WELCOMED, BUT WHY DID HE LEAVE?
In the recent special between The Simpsons and the Marvel Cinematic Universe we had a pleasant surprise. The return of the original cast that the millennials and gen-x people met. The recent Disney + special El Bueno, El Bart and El Loki made voices like Humberto Vélez (Homero Simpson) or Claudia Motta (Bart) return.
This news was celebrated by the great community of fans of The Simpsons who had great appreciation for the work done by Humberto Vélez. However, why did they change the voice of the series? Even its protagonists like Marge, Bart and Homer Simpson.
THIS IS THE REASON WHY HUMBERTO VÉLEZ STOPPED BEING THE VOICE OF HOMERO SIMPSON:
According to La Jornada, this began with a conflict between the company Recording and Dubbing International and the original voices of Homero Simpson, Marge, Bart, etc. those they had hired for 15 years that led to a strike by about 300 people from the voice acting medium.
Despite the series’ success in the early 2000s, the wage gap between their American counterparts was one of the reasons they decided to go on strike. Humberto Vélez, who was still the voice of Homero Simpson, mentioned that Dan Castellaneta (his English counterpart) earned about $ 300,000 per program, while in Mexico they received at most 600 Mexican pesos ($ 60 at that time).
In fact, the Fox company had remained on the sidelines, as voices in English had gone on strike that same year demanding better wages.
However, it seemed that their Mexican counterparts would not have the same luck. Despite having the support of other unions and the National Association of Actors, the strike lasted until the middle of the same year. Until, in an interview with the newspaper Crónica of 2005, Humberto Vélez confirms that he has decided to let go of the voice of Homero Simpson:
‘I’m not giving it up, they took it from me (…) I will never go back to that company. If the distributors of the series wanted me to return to do the voice of Homer Simpson, they will have to look for me, I will no longer beg. ‘ Finally, the 2007 movie, as well as the subsequent seasons of the series, were dubbed by a new cast.
