Reddit co-founder Ohanian resigns from the company’s board of directors: ‘Take someone black for me’.

Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of social media platform Reddit, announced that she wanted to ‘focus her attention on stopping racism’ and resigned from the company’s board of directors. Ohanian said he asked the company to take a black candidate instead.

Ohanian, in his announcement on his personal website, said, “I established Reddit 15 years ago to help people find a sense of community and belonging. It was too late to do the right thing. I do this for myself, my family and my country . ”

 It is long overdue to do the right thing. I’m doing this for me, for my family, and for my country. I’m saying this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: What did you do? I have resigned as a member of the reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a black candidate, and I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate, and I’m starting with a pledge of $1M to @kaepernick7’s @yourrightscamp
 I believe resignation can actually be an act of leadership from people in power right now. To everyone fighting to fix our broken nation: do not stop.

Stating that he wants Reddit to fill his position on the board with a ‘black candidate’, Ohanian stated that he will use the money he will earn from his stake in the company to serve black people against racism.

He also added that he donated $ 1 million to Know Your Rights Camp , founded by former American football player Colin Kaepernick, working to ensure the liberation and prosperity of black communities .
