Daily, Google Maps users send more than 20 million contributions, from reviews and ratings to photos, answers to other people’s questions, address updates and more.
“Thanks to the contributions of the global Google Maps community , we have been able to add accessibility information, such as entrances and wheelchair-friendly bathrooms, to more than 50 million places around the planet,” said Kevin Reece, Product Director of google Maps .
But it’s not all about more information. Google also uses a system and a team of moderators to remove inappropriate content.
“We use automated detection systems, including machine learning models, that analyze the millions of contributions we receive each day to detect and eliminate content that violates policies. In the case of false reviews, our systems verify each review before it is published on Google Maps , looking for signs of false content. Our machine learning models monitor specific words and phrases, examine patterns in the types of content that an account has contributed in the past, and detect patterns of suspicious reviews , ”he said.
We also removed more than 580,000 reviews and 258,000 business profiles that reported directly to us, because we made it easier for people to report inappropriate content.
